Ricky Ravenhill column: It’s hard to put your finger on what went wrong at Rotherham. But maybe it was a little reminder that we have to be bang up for it every single week. It’s no good just turning up thinking you’re a good team.
We were all talking about wanting to do well and continuing our good start to the season – but everything that could go wrong seemed to.
I think it did show that we need to be a bit more ugly at times. You can’t expect to play people off the park every game, especially when you’re going away from home. You have to keep it tight and compact and earn the right to play.
We’ve got a good squad together but it’s by no means a given that we will pick up points every time. You need at least nine or ten on their game and I think last week’s defeat was a little reminder for everyone throughout the club.
Take nothing away from Rotherham. They are a good team and have spent plenty of money as well. They have some good individuals in their squad but we also know we’ve got a lot more about us in terms of structure and discipline than we showed.
The new stadium there looked fantastic and the atmosphere was really good. Having so many of our fans behind the goal helped to make it but it also seems Rotherham have got a few more supporters returning now they are back from the Don Valley.
Everyone was a little bit down afterwards and one or two were still licking their wounds on Monday morning. But as soon as the gaffer had his say and we got the first session underway, you could see we were all upbeat again.
These things happen during the season and you’re never going to win every game. But it’s gone now and we’re looking towards Saturday.
Accrington are never an easy team to beat and you know what you’re going to get. They are always big and strong and you’ve got to stick to your jobs. We have to make sure we stay disciplined and get all the basics right.
