Guiseley 3 Gloucester City 1
Guiseley left their cloak of invincibility in the dressing room at Nethermoor but they remembered to wrap it around their shoulders for the second half and earned the victory that maintained their 100 per cent start.
The Lions stay top of Blue Square Bet North after mounting a second-half comeback that was aided by a rash challenge which earned Lewis Hogg a second yellow card minutes after the interval.
The visitors battled well with ten men but in truth 11 Gloucester men would have struggled against the tide.
Guiseley were in determined mood after manager Steve Kittrick’s half time words of encouragement and romped home.
It was a fifth win in five starts for the Lions but it looked unlikely after Tom Webb broke through down the right in the 26th minute before cutting inside and squeezing a shot between Steve Drench and his post.
Just two minutes into the second half the Lions had a strong penalty appeal when a fierce drive from Wayne Brooksby was blocked by two lunging defenders. Handball claims were waved away and from the resulting corner Nicky Boshell tamely spooned the ball into visiting keeper Connor Thomson’s hands.
Webb, who had been booked for verbal abuse in first-half stoppage time, brought Brooksby down in the 49th minute to give the referee his easiest decision of the day.
Guiseley then turned the game in a four-minute spell. The free-kick for the foul on the right touchline was defended but the second wave of attack saw Josh Wilson’s low centre turned in by Boshell and soon after Wilson burst through the inside right channel before drilling in across the City keeper.
Midway through the second half Boshell wrapped up the points when he calmly lashed home from ten yards after some poor defending by the visitors when Rhys Meynell appeared to have wasted the chance by dithering as he jinked along the edge of the area.
