Andrew Davies believes City are capable of springing a Capital One Cup shock on Watford after their latest five-star display.

They head for the Championship club tomorrow night with confidence soaring following the thrashing of Wimbledon on Saturday.

The 5-1 stroll was the first time since 1987 that City had scored five in the first half.

The second home win in a week also put them in positive goal difference – which last happened in November 2009.

Phil Parkinson is expected to make changes for the club’s second trip to Vicarage Road in seven months. But Davies, who could be one of those to dip out, still expects a strong showing.

He said: “We went there last year and didn’t do very well. But you’ve got to get that winning mentality into the team and I don’t see why we can’t get a result if we perform like we have been.

“The manager has got us working really hard for each other and he’s built himself a really good side. If we outwork teams, the quality will shine through.”

City are up to fourth in the early League Two table. Davies scored in the weekend rout with a free-kick from 45 yards that keeper Seb Brown completely misjudged and is not surprised they have kicked off so strongly.

He added: “We’re a fit bunch of lads and we have been right from the start. It’s important we keep doing the same things and I really do think we can challenge for promotion this season. I’ve come here because I think we can push for it. The manager said that when I signed.

“It’s important I get my career going because if I came back here and didn’t do very well, that’s me on a downward spiral.

“It was so important he got some players in who were obviously going to push on. I keep hearing that Rotherham are going to go up and Fleetwood as well. But I don’t think there are any favourites.

“The most disciplined and the team who work the hardest for each other are going to be the ones up there.”

Parkinson may look to recall Alan Connell, Garry Thompson and Stephen Darby for the second-round tie. Jon McLaughlin could also get his first outing in goal.

The City boss said: “I’ve said all along that the league’s our priority. It’s the same with every manager at every club in the country.

“However, like we did at Notts County, we’ll pick a team we feel can go and compete down there.”

With Ricky Ravenhill and Ritchie Jones still out, Parkinson is eyeing a loan addition to the midfield before Friday’s transfer deadline.

He added: “We’re still thinking about that. We’ve got to make sure we’ve got enough bodies to see us through this early part of the season.”
