Guiseley 2 Gainsborough 0 Guiseley will travel to Workington tomorrow still leading the Blue Square Bet North Division after making it three wins out of three.

It was far from a regulation victory at Nethermoor but it was a hard-earned one and saw them clinch their first clean sheet of the season.

Blanking a talented and disciplined Trinity looked unlikely when the visitors were awarded a penalty just after the half-hour.

Matthew Godden broke into the area in the 32nd minute and went down under a clumsy challenge by Lions’ skipper Simon Ainge. What followed was a bizarre wrestle for the ball between Godden and Jamie Yates that Trinity skipper Dominic Roma had to sprint forward to settle.

Yates won the nod from his captain and spotted the ball but Guiseley keeper Steve Drench spread himself well to save.

The home side were already 2-0 to the good by then after getting off to a bright start when Gavin Rothery steered a Wayne Brooksby cross in with a glancing header in the seventh minute.

The Lions tightened their grip on the game with a penalty of their own in the 21st minute. As with the Trinity award, there could have been no complaints.

Andy McWilliams had raced into the area and was tripped by midfielder Jonathan D’Laryea. Rothery drilled the spot-kick to visiting keeper Jan Budtz’s right hand side as he dived left.

The home side had some early second-half chances but Drench was soon being tested. The keeper did well to tip a Roma free-kick over the bar and was relieved to see an offside flag soon after. Drench had run out to dive at substitute Bradley Barra-clough’s feet but was left stranded as the ball was played square for Godden, who stroked into the unguarded net, only to see his celebrations cut short.

Drench did well to save a low angled drive from Godden but Lions’ substitute James Walshaw also forced Budtz into a fine late save.
