Histon 2 Guiseley 2

Guiseley leapt two places to second in the Blue Square Bet North with a draw at mid-table Histon but it could have been so much better for the Lions.

With neighbours FC Halifax Town suffering a postponement at The Shay, leaders Hyde FC losing away from home and Stalybridge Celtic being hammered 4-0 at home, the Lions will be rueing the two points they dropped.

However, they should be focussing on the fact that they rescued a point.

The Cambridgeshire outfit opened up a two-goal lead before super sub James Walshaw again came off the bench to turn a game in Guiseley’s favour.

Lions spokesman Stuart Allen said: “We had enough chances to win it and if we had scored that missed penalty it would have been a victory.

“They defended deep and were difficult to break down but in my opinion we ought to have taken the three points.”

Guiseley should have lead when Ciaran Toner was brought down in the area in the 18th minute but Lee Ellington’s spot-kick was saved.

Simon Baldry and Andy Holdsworth had efforts saved before Dan Holman broke the deadlock from a 38th-minute breakaway.

The same player capitalised on some slack defending to double Histon’s advantage eight minutes after the interval.

Walshaw and Danny Forrest were introduced with approximately half an hour remaining and though the latter was first to show, having a 67th-minute shot saved, it was Walshaw who netted the all-important strikes.

He drove in a good finish in the 70th minute and just over ten minutes later was brought down in the area before stepping up to convert the spot-kick.

Walshaw came close to winning it two minutes from time with a good shot that was well saved at full stretch by the home keeper.
