Eccleshill United 2 Carlton Town 0
A late goal in each half, the first from the penalty spot, gave Eccleshill a good win against one of the sides tipped to do well this season.
Nottinghamshire side Carlton Town have picked up players from their local rivals and have a strong squad but this did not deter their Bradford hosts.
A foul inside a packed area just before the interval handed United their first clear-cut opportunity and captain Stuart Waiter rammed home the spot kick.
The second goal stemmed from a late second-half break. The home side had been pegged back but Ben Hardy raced clear on the counter-attack before unselfishly laying the ball to James Hanson to make it 2-0.
"Full credit to Carlton, I can see why they were fourth in the league before we beat them, but we have come through to get a win with pure pride and effort," said United boss Steve Watson.
"Our game plan was to get the ball on the floor and play a bit.
"Unfortunately, it didn't work out anything like that. It wasn't pretty and we had a word with the players at half-time, hoping it would improve.
"You can't always play the beautiful game so we adapted well. We had to graft but it was a very good win against a good side."
