Guiseley 2 Workington 1
The Lions finally broke their sequence of four straight draws in the Blue Square Bet North with a narrow victory over lowly Workington at Nethermoor.
A decent display from the visitors belied their 18th place but they left West Yorkshire empty handed as Guiseley earned the three points that keep them in third place.
It was the Lions’ tenth victory of the season but although leaders Hyde FC were held to a draw, Stalybridge Celtic won to keep Steve Kittrick’s men at arm’s length.
The home side had a debutant in the starting line-up after Chris Senior had been brought in on a one-month loan deal from Nicky Laws’ Blue Square Premier outfit Alfreton Town.
The player – who trained with the Guiseley squad on Thursday – made himself an instant hero as he broke the deadlock midway through the first half.
The home side had created several opportunities but skipper Simon Ainge, Gavin Rothery, Lee Ellington and Danny Forrest, twice, were either just off target or thwarted by the visiting keeper.
In the 23rd minute, Senior raced onto a through ball and beat off the challenge of Workington’s keeper but still had work to do. A covering defender had come into the picture but Senior bypassed him with a fine finish.
Guiseley produced other chances but the visitors were still in the match and they levelled with a little under 15 minutes remaining. A corner was allowed to bounce in the area and Gareth Arnison pounced to net from close range.
Minutes later Gavin Rothery converted a Simon Baldry cross to put the Lions back in front and they maintained that advantage for the last ten minutes.
Spokesman Stuart Allen said: “The important thing is that we are back to winning ways in the league and I feel we deserved the result.
“However, Workington played well and worked very hard to close us down and their equaliser was probably deserved at the time.
“Chris (Senior) had a very good debut and created a couple of good chances as well as taking his goal well. It is never easy coming into a new club and he only met the players once before the game.”
