Michael Flynn column

There will be no sicker feeling than seeing Wimbledon in the hat on Sunday drawing out Manchester United away. That would be the ultimate worst-case scenario, so we must not blow this chance.

It’s been too long since Bradford City got into the FA Cup third round. Just imagine the excitement of a big draw to lift all the doom and gloom.

Some teams always seem to get the luck. I know Gillingham have pulled out Chelsea and Arsenal in recent years, while Huddersfield went to Stamford Bridge twice in a couple of seasons.

Hopefully it will be our turn now and we’ll have something to look forward to going into the new year. Let’s face it, 2011 has been one to forget.

But first we have to beat Wimbledon, which we didn’t manage to do in September. We took the lead but didn’t push on from there and the best team won.

Saturday will depend on which City turn up. We’ve got to make sure it’s the battling team from Gillingham last week, showing that same determination with just a bit more quality on the ball at home.

The only frustration about that game was the result. We need to kill teams off when we are on top.

Our form in the cups has been good and now it’s time to show that against a team from our division.

People get frustrated about the lack of football in League Two but if you don’t match teams physically you are going to get beaten. I’d rather battle hard and nick a win than play fancy football and end up with nothing.

Like everyone, I was as shocked and bewildered to hear the tragic news about Gary Speed. You would never hear a bad word said about him.

Everyone’s thoughts at Bradford City are with his family and close relatives at this awful time. But if anything can come out of this tragedy, it does show that you are never alone.

If there’s anybody feeling like the demons are against them, then go and find someone to talk to and share the burden. It’s such a shame that Gary wasn’t able to do that. We’ll miss a great player, great manager and a great person.
