Bradford City powered into the quarter-finals of the Women’s West Riding County Cup with a 9-1 victory over Ossett Albion.
The luck of the draw has always been a key to success in cup football and City have had a lifetime’s portion of that this season, with every pairing being with a club from a lower division.
Albion, from the City A team’s North East Regional League Division One South, battled gamely after finding themselves behind to a Charlotte Stuart goal after two minutes.
But they never looked like getting anything from the game as Caroline Omboyi, Becky Griggs and Kirsty Russell hit two apiece.
An own goal and an injury-time penalty from keeper Melanie Garside-Wight completed the tally.
That spot-kick success would have sat well with the City striker-turned-keeper, who is the club’s record scorer with over 300 goals at all levels.
Coach Steve Winterburn could have key players missing for Sunday’s Northern Combination clash at home to Middlesbrough. But with promotion very much in their grasp, league points remain a priority.
In the County Cup, Harrogate Railway – 7-2 winners over Regional League side Kirklees and unbeaten in the West Riding League Premier Division – are next up for City.
Amaranth, who were 4-3 winners at Wortley, or Farsley, who won 7-3 at home to Rothwell Town, await the winners in the semi-finals.
The other side of the draw saw Guiseley beat Wigton Moor 4-1 to secure a quarter-final tie at home to Leeds City Vixens, while favourites Leeds United beat Huddersfield Town 5-0 and now face Tingley Athletic.
In Sunday’s West Riding Premier games, Bradford Park Avenue host Harrogate Railway looking to end the visitors’ 100 per cent record.
Joint third-placed Keighley Oaks and Brighouse go head to head, with each side looking to maintain their promotion hopes.
