Thackley prevented Retford United going to the top of the Baris Northern Counties East League Premier Division when they took all three points off their high-flying visitors yesterday.

It was the fourth game on the spin against leading sides for the Dennyboys but the victory lifted them to sixth and re-ignited their own promotion push.

It was no more than they deserved as they put in a good all-round performance and dominated long spells.

They broke the deadlock early after forcing a ninth- minute free-kick. The delivery was headed back to Nicky Mathews and he chipped the ball into the middle for Dennyboys’ skipper Rob Morgan to convert with a glancing header.

Retford keeper Jason Foster made a good save to deny Chris Davey as Thackley looked to increase their lead. Brice Tiani put a drive just wide and a lob from Matthews struck Foster’s post before going safe.

In the second half, Dennyboys’ keeper Matt Convey reacted amazingly quickly to get one hand to a point- blank header from Jamie Brown.

The points were wrapped up on the hour when Davey latched onto a headed clearance and netted a fantastic 20-yard volley.

There was also a debut for new signing Mark Bett. The former Bradford Park Avenue and Farsley Celtic forward came off the bench in the first half to replace the injured Dean Walters.

Liversedge suffered defeat on the road as they went down 4-2 at Arnold Town, despite taking the lead.

Dave Boardman broke the deadlock, and though Arnold hit back through Callum Mason, Sedge still led at the break thanks to a Nathan Cartman strike.

The second half belonged to the home side as Josh Schofield equalised, Chris Freestone put them in front for the first time and Mitchell Slawson added a fourth.

To compound a bad day for Sedge, they had midfielder Andy Shuttleworth sent off deep into stoppage time.

Albion Sports strengthened their share of the leadership in Division One with a goal- difference boosting 7-1 triumph at Teversal.

Recent signing Karl Hall, a Seychelles international, netted the only goal of the first half and Teversal levelled just after the interval through Sean Dickinson.

However, Alex Cusack ran in four, with Aron Heywood and substitute Anil Singh also scoring as the goals rattled in during a one-sided second half.
