Bradford City will be at home to fellow Combination title-chasers Newcastle United after a hard-earned 2-1 victory at neighbours Huddersfield Town secured their place in the FA Women’s Cup first round proper.

Newcastle had to work hard for a 4-0 win at Rothwell, from the North East Regional League, in their tie, while City found themselves behind early on after conceding a penalty at Town.

But the next key decision went their way when they too were awarded a spot-kick, for a handling offence on the edge of the area, which Caroline Omboyi calmly slotted home.

It was 2-1 to City at the break as Emma Dobson, Kerrie Zserdicky and Clare Fawcett linked to play in Omboyi for her second goal.

That proved to be the winner as the second half remained goalless despite chances at both ends, including one for Town by former Bradford Park Avenue player Kelsey Byrne.

City’s attention now turns to the West Riding County FA Cup with Sunday’s home tie against Ossett Albion, from North East Regional Division One (South).

The fixture will see former Albion players Zserdicky and Paige Crosby come up against their old club for the first time since switching.

Albion crashed 7-3 to Kirklees in their last game and are just one point ahead of the City A side in that division, with the Bantams women playing Goole hoping to improve on their current second-bottom spot.

A victory for City in the County Cup will set up a home quarter-final with Harrogate Railway or Kirklees.

Leeds United will play Huddersfield in the other leg of the draw, with the winners joint-favourites alongside City to reach the final.

The County Cup has affected league programmes across the region, with the full second-round draw as follows: Harrogate Railway v Kirklees, Farsley v Rothwell Town, Leeds City Vixens v Lepton Highlanders, Wortley v Amaranth, Bradford City v Ossett Albion, Wigton Moor v Guiseley, Wortley v Tingley Athletic, Leeds United v Huddersfield Town.

In the West Riding County League, Avenue had a welcome 5-1 Premier Division win at Ossett Town courtesy of Nic Chamberlain (2), Chrisy Berry, captain Sarah Huby and an own goal.

Avenue’s scheduled game at Keighley Oaks on Sunday has been postponed.
