Nahki Wells will play in Bermuda’s final World Cup qualifier tonight before putting his international career on the back-burner to focus on City.
Saturday’s FA Cup match winner had no time to celebrate the wonder goal that sunk Rochdale – and earned City a home tie against either AFC Wimbledon or Scunthorpe in round two – as he hopped straight on a plane to face Barbados.
But he has agreed to put club before country in future in a bid to cement his name in Phil Parkinson’s first-team plans.
Assistant boss Steve Parkin said: “While we’re really pleased Nahki’s picked for his country, there comes a time when he’s been asked to spend more time here.
“Bermuda have been very understanding. If they are real World Cup qualifiers then all well and good but with friendlies, we prefer him to be here.
“We’ve not seen a lot of him. I’ve been here eight or nine weeks now and probably only seen him for three of them because he’s been on international duty so often.
“Nahki has got a lot to learn but one thing he has got is natural talent. He’s got something about him and a real eye for goal.”
