Brighouse Town's fairytale run in the FA Youth Cup came to an end in midweek but it was in celebration not humiliation as Town’s youngsters lost 4-2 at Kidderminster Harriers.
Brighouse have only been on the non-league ladder for three seasons so to reach the first round proper of the competition was a superb effort.
They also did well against the more established Harr-iers on Wednesday.
Town’s vice-chairman Ray McLoughlin said: “We were the only team in our area to reach that stage and I understand the winners of that tie on Wednesday go on to play Sheffield United.
“It would have been great for the boys to play against a Football League club at this stage in their development.”
That opportunity has passed them by this term but McLoughlin feels the club has the structure in place to allow them a similar run in the near future.
He was also full of praise for the manager of the under-19s squad that did so well, despite the FA Youth Cup’s under-18 ruling.
“For such a young man himself, Simon Wood is doing a wonderful job with our youth team and there are good coaches helping him bring through the boys in the younger age-group teams,” said McLoughlin.
“Simon plays for Wake-field now but still has the club at heart. It just goes to show what can be achieved when you have the right people and sends out the right message when we are trying to attract serious young players to this football club.”
