It was a good night in the West Riding County Cup for our local clubs, with five of the seven who were involved joining Albion Sports in the second round.

Holders Guiseley made comfortable progress, winning 2-0 at home against Tadcaster Albion to book their place alongside Albion, who won through on Monday.

The Lions broke the deadlock when Danny Boshell lashed a 20-yard screamer into the top corner and from then Taddy were on the defensive.

A second goal from former Huddersfield Town skipper Andy Holdsworth, also from outside the area, put the gloss on the win.

Last season’s beaten finalists Thackley failed to make it over the first hurdle this term as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Armthorpe Welfare.

The Dennyboys suffered heartbreak in bizarre fashion.

Thackley were caught offside, Welfare keeper Jamie Green launched the resulting free-kick upfield and as Thackley defender James Firth leapt, the ball skimmed off his head and flew past his own keeper.

Brighouse Town were the only other club with a home tie and they beat Pontefract Collieries 3-1.

Craig Thompson and Anthony Haigh gave Town a 2-0 half-time lead and, though Ponte hit back through Greg McGory, a Danny Naidole strike wrapped up the scoring.

Farsley fought back to win 4-2 at Ossett Town.

Danny Toronczak put the home side in front but a brace from Ben Jones and strikes from Simeon Bambrook and Joe Mitchell put the visitors in charge before a late consolation from Andy Catton.

The best victory of the night was Eccleshill United’s 2-1 win at Goole, who are two divisions higher than the Eagles.

The visitors had to play with ten men for 75 minutes following Craig Laight’s dismissal for foul and abusive language and also had to come from a goal down. However, strikes from Marcus Edwards and Matty Moore won the tie.

Liversedge won 1-0 away at Yorkshire Amateur, Carl Horsman heading home after Joe Jagger and Sam Mir had combined at a 62nd-minute corner, but Silsden lost 3-2 at Garforth Town.

Andy Lee and Chris Wademan had responded to Paul Walker’s opener for Garforth but two late goals broke Silsden hearts.
