Bradford Park Avenue were left feeling deflated by yesterday’s draw for the FA Cup first round proper.

While neighbours City (v Rochdale) and Halifax (v Charlton) were handed attractive home ties, Avenue face a long trip to take on AFC Totton.

The Hampshire outfit are currently riding high in the Evo-Stik South League Premier Division, the same step on the non-League ladder as John Deacey’s men.

“Ideally we wanted a Football League club at home, not just because of the financial benefits but it would have been nice for our fans,” said Deacey, whose side made progress with a 2-0 win at Kidsgrove Athletic on Saturday.

“It would have been great to get Bradford City at home but, with 80 clubs in this round, the odds were against that.”

With clubs such as Huddersfield, who must travel to face Swindon, Sheffield giants Wednesday and United, the Bantams and Preston in the competition at this stage, the draw was not kind to Avenue.

Deacey said: “It will be a difficult tie in travelling as well as on the pitch but one we could win if we prepare right and have the right attitude on the day.

“It has been a great effort to get this far and all the lads have contributed.

“The entire squad – the lads who didn’t get to play in Saturday’s win at Kidsgrove and even the ones who didn’t make that squad – have all been part of it.

“They have been fantastic and it’s still good all round for the players and the club to be in the first round proper.”

Meanwhile, City will welcome League One strugglers Rochdale to Valley Parade for their tie, which is scheduled for Saturday, November 12.

But Halifax received the plum draw of the round as League One leaders Charlton must visit The Shay.

The Evo-Stik League Division One North side sealed their place in the hat despite missing two penalties at Solihull Moors, Danny Holland’s goal earning a 1-0 win.
