Thackley are looking towards their forthcoming derby clash with Eccleshill United with trepidation.

Once upon a time, fixtures between the Bradford neighbours, who are separated by just two miles, were epic encounters.

The clubs were divisional rivals and supremacy flitted between them from season to season, sometimes week to week.

The downward spiral of the Eagles in recent times has been well documented, and they even struggled to stay on the non-league ladder at one point.

The green shoots of recovery were visible last season and Eagles boss Ian Banks has taken that up another notch.

So much so that even though Eccleshill are still a division below Thackley at the moment, they will go into the much-anticipated FA Vase first-round derby clash with no fear.

The Eagles will have home advantage, so that is another leveller.

Thackley spokesman Mick Lodge said: “As soon as we knew it was Eccleshill in the next round, at their ground, there was a collective groan.

"We would sooner have played anyone else at this stage. Eccy are on a great run in their division and had a superb result at Rossington Main in the second- qualifying round.

“It should be a great game though, and good for the city. We always enjoy going up there and it will be like the old days with so much riding on the game.”

Eccleshill Football Club chairman Adrian Benson added: “It should be a good game between the sides with a lot to play for.

"We get on well with everyone at Thackley and I’m sure it will be one of those when everyone is the best of enemies and the best of friends as soon as the final whistle goes.”

The tie is scheduled for October 22 at Eccleshill’s Rapid Solicitors Stadium.
