Bradford Park Avenue’s main priority this season might be the league but Saturday’s FA Cup tie at home to Warrington Town provides the ideal opportunity to return to winning ways.
A loss and a draw in the space of four days has seen them stutter in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division.
But they remain in the top five and that should make them big favourites over Saturday’s opponents, who are 18th in Evo-Stik Division One North.
Town are five places below Harrogate Railway Athletic, who visited Horsfall Stadium in the last round and were emphatically despatched 8-0.
There were hat-tricks for Aiden Savory and Tom Greaves in that match and Avenue should have a stronger squad for tomorrow’s second qualifying round tie.
Club captain James Knowles returned to action in the midweek draw at struggling Stocksbridge PS, as did Matty Plummer. Both of the injured men, along with Matty James who remains sidelined with a back complaint, have been badly missed.
Avenue boss John Deacey said: “These are some of our big hitters, so obviously we are a different proposition when they are out.
“We have got versatile players in the squad, which is vital when you have a small group of players as we do but you want to have your best players available.”
Deacey admitted he was keen to bolster his ranks up front.
He said: “I still think we need some fire-power and we are looking to add someone who can improve our strike rate because we are creating chances.”
Nathan Hotte, Ross Daly, Adam Clayton, Tom Greaves and Richard Marshall have all played out of position recently due to an injury glut but have done well.
Avenue’s dip in form has seen them slip four points behind leaders Northwich Victoria, who beat them 2-1 at Horsfall on Saturday after stand-in skipper Rob O’Brien had a penalty saved with the score still 1-1 late in the game.
They then had to come back from 2-0 down to earn a point at second-bottom Stocksbridge PS on Tuesday.
