Gainsborough Trinity 1 Guiseley 0

Guiseley slipped to their second consecutive league defeat, which allowed Trinity to leapfrog them into third place in the table.

Guiseley came closest to breaking the deadlock in the goalless first half. Early chances included a Simon Baldry cross that was just cleared, an Alex Davidson shot that was well saved and a Lee Ellington effort that went just wide.

Their best opening came just after the half-hour through former Huddersfield and Park Avenue winger Baldry. He beat his man to get in a shot but it grazed the outside of the post.

Gavin Rothery, twice, and Ellington were close again in the second half before Trinity banked all three points with a late winner.

There was a little over ten minutes remaining when a corner was whipped into Guiseley’s area and, in the ensuing scramble, Gavin Cowan stabbed the ball home.

Joe O’Neill threatened to level before a Gavin Allott header from a Ciaran Toner cross flashed agonisingly wide for the Lions.

Guiseley director Stuart Allen said: “It was a sickener when that scrambled goal went in because neither team was at their best and a draw would probably have been the fair result.

“We had more possession but there wasn’t a cartload of chances to be honest.

“They will feel they have won while not being at full steam while our lads are left kicking themselves because they haven’t got at least a point.

“Leaders Hyde dropped their first points of the season and Stalybridge Celtic were held to a home draw by Gloucester City so that makes our result even more frustrating.

“We didn’t deserve to lose but that is how it goes sometimes.”
