Two of the three local semi-pro clubs involved in Saturday’s FA Vase second qualifying round won through to set up a derby tie in the next round.
Eccleshill United showed just how good a roll they are on with a 2-1 victory at Rossington Main. Charlie Flaherty set up the opener for Andy Howland and Matty Moore scored with a superb strike.
It was the Eagles’ sixth straight victory since they were beaten at Rossington in Northern Counties East League Division One – which was their fifth defeat in their opening six games of the season.
The Eagles will have home advantage over Thackley, who won 2-1 at NCEL Premier Division rivals Pickering Town.
The Dennyboys’ victory could have been more emphatic as they dominated the first half. However, they took their foot off the gas in the second half and almost ground to a halt.
They led as early as the third minute when Dean Walters slotted home with only the keeper to beat. It would have been 2-0 in the eighth minute but for an excellent save by the home keeper to deny Chris Davey.
Midway through the first half the Dennyboys did double their advantage when Nicky Matthews headed home a Matt Morgan cross.
Pickering skipper Tom Adams stepped up to take a penalty after a trip in the area. Thackley keeper Matt Convey could only parry it and Joel Ramm slotted the loose ball in from an acute angle.
Brice Tiani and Andy Philp had further chances for the Dennyboys but they had Convey to thank for their win as he dived high to his right to save a last-gasp effort from Adams.
