Two wins from unconvincing performances have produced six points for Avenue over the past week and they will go into tomorrow's Division One clash with Eastwood Town in fifth place.

Avenue are looking for an instant return to the Premier Division after last season's relegation and, at this stage, they will take points however they come along.

"They were scruffy, no doubt about it, but is there such a thing as a bad win?" said assistant boss Clive Freeman after Tuesday's 1-0 win at Bridling-ton Town.

"In both games the best team won, although admittedly they were poor from a spectator's point of view.

"Yet I'm sure the fans would swap the beautiful game for points on the board while we are not quite firing on all cylinders."

Skipper Lee Connor is available for the rearranged visit of Eastwood - both clubs suffered early exits from the FA Cup - after missing the last two games, although he may have trouble forcing his way back in.

In his absence, summer signings Gary Shaw and former Bradford and Barnsley midfielder Neil Redfearn have formed the centre of defence.

In front of goalkeeper Piotr Skiba, who made his debut in last Saturday's 1-0 win over Wakefield, the duo have kept back-to-back clean sheets.

"Shawy and Redders were magnificent at Brid and Piotr made the odd save when called on," said Freeman.

"He didn't get the chance to shine, a bit like last weekend when he made his debut.

"He has come from Poland and he must be thinking this goalkeeping lark is easy in England.

"The trouble is, Shawy is out through work commitments tomorrow and that will be a big blow because he has played in every game. On the plus side, Lee is back and Neil Ross is available again."

Ross has served a three-game suspension for his sending off in Avenue's only defeat in the UniBond so far this season at Alsager Town.

Another advantage is that recent signings Lee Morris, David Cooke and Neil Grayston have had two games to settle into the squad.

Freeman said: "Bringing in players of their calibre has definitely strengthened us. We feel we are on the up and why can't we keep it going?

"We know Eastwood are a young side, full of running, but we will be looking to take all three points off them.

"We have a great blend of youth and experience and that is vital, whatever level you are playing your football at.

"The older heads like Connor, Redders and Grayston will help the likes of Tom Greaves, Lee Tuck and Nathan Kamara."
