Defence has been the word on everyone’s lips this week.

To be honest, we talk about our defence every week but, after the performance at Halifax, we know we need to improve urgently.

It wasn’t a great performance, that was obvious for all to see.

The defence was way off the mark and we were disappointed to concede so many points because we actually did some good things with the ball.

You can take solace from the fact it’s the Challenge Cup and you’re through to the next round, so really that’s all that matters. But we have to improve.

I’m a big believer in the idea that defence is more of a mindset than a physical thing.

You need to show willing, desire and pride in the line. You also have to have trust in your team-mates and, if you have all that, it really does help.

Obviously your defence is one of the most important things and, although we scored some nice tries against Fax, when you turn the ball over you’ve got to have the mental toughness not to let anyone through.

We have to stop letting in big scores and kill games off when we do take the lead.

We’re certainly doing it tough at the moment with all the injuries we’ve had but the club made a surprise move last week and BJ (Ben Jeffries) coming back in will help us out a lot.

After losing BK (Brett Kearney) for a month and a bit and with Herbie (Marc Herbert) tearing his hamstring, we’re looking a bit thin on the ground at half-back.

We’ve obviously looked at the options and BJ wanted to leave Wakey so the opportunity became available and we went for it.

We’ve got some young lads who might have been able to come in but they’re a little bit off yet so it’s a good move as far as I can see.

He’s an experienced Super League player and he’s been here before so it’s been pretty easy for him to slot back in again.
