Guiseley 2, Gainsborough 0 The Lions secured their place in the play-offs with a comfortable home victory against Gainsborough Trinity.

The victory moved Guiseley into fifth spot in the Blue Square Bet North and guaranteed their participation in the end-of-season battle for a place in the top tier of non-league football. The Lions could yet drop a position but sixth-placed Eastwood Town have been refused entry into the league above due to ground grading.

Guiseley breached the 70-point barrier with Sat-urday’s win and had chances to open the scoring even before Gavin Rothery’s eighth-minute strike.

A good run and cross from Simon Baldry preceded a shot from leading scorer James Walshaw and, when that effort was parried, Rothery pounced to tuck in the rebound.

Walshaw was one of several Lions players who were unfortunate not to capitalise on the plethora of chances the home side created.

However, Guiseley sealed victory early in the second half.

A cross from the right wing was dispatched thanks to a well-placed header from former Huddersfield Town and Bradford Park Avenue winger Baldry in the 55th minute.

There is no respite for the Lions as they have still have two games of the regular season to get through before the play-offs.

They can chalk one off after tomorrow's trip to the north east to take on Blyth Spartans.

Spokesman Stuart Allen said: “It is a huge relief to be in the play-offs with two games to go but we still need to keep the run going because once you take your foot off the gas, it can be very difficult to rediscover your form.

“There were no injuries from the Gainsborough game but Steve (manager Kittrick) feels tomorrow will be too soon for either Joe O’Neill or Liam Needham to make their comebacks.

“But they will have a chance of featuring in the play-offs, if not Saturday’s home game against Eastwood.”
