Bradford Park Avenue 4, Worksop Town 0
Bradford Park Avenue booked their place in the Evo-Stik League play-offs with a game to spare as they snuffed out Worksop Town’s slim hopes of making the end-of-season Premier Division extras.
No matter what happens in tomorrow’s full fixture list, John Deacey’s men cannot now finish outside the top five.
That means their Bank Holiday trip to Mickleover Sports is for points which could alter who they face, while Worksop’s final game of the season will be a dead rubber.
Avenue boss Deacey said: “I thought it was a good performance overall and that we defended very well. I don’t remember an effort from Worksop that caused us any real problems.
“To get in there (the play-offs) from where we were has been a good effort from everyone but all we have achieved is the first part of our aim.
“It looks like all four of us (the clubs in the play-off zone) are just playing to finish as high as we can now to determine who we face.”
It took Avenue a while to break the deadlock after they had been on top right from the start. They forced several corners but had to wait until a good move midway through the first period to open the scoring.
It was a hands-on-heads moment for both attack and defence as Tom Greaves worked his way down the right flank before turning in a low centre.
The ball ran through Worksop’s penalty area with players from both sides swinging legs at it before Nathan Hotte slotted home from eight yards.
It proved to be the only success of the first half but the hosts doubled their advantage soon after the interval.
Worksop were first to threaten in the second half but three minutes in Avenue got the goal which effectively ended the contest.
A through-ball from Aiden Savory led to a race between Greaves and visiting keeper Jon Kennedy, which the Avenue striker just won.
His chip headed towards the empty net and eventually went over the line as right back Chris Wood tried to make a last-ditch clearance.
It was 3-0 just after the hour mark as Savory netted from close range following good build-up play between Matty James and Nicky Boshell.
Tom Claisse came off the Avenue bench with 12 minutes remaining and made a memorable and almost immediate contribution.
Two minutes after entering the fray, he lined up a free-kick 25 yards out and curled it into the top corner to wrap up the scoring.
