Bradford Park Avenue are right back among the play-off hopefuls but have been warned not to lose concentration when they host basement outfit Retford United on Saturday.

Avenue boss John Deacey has hammered home the message that the fixture is a potential banana skin.

Four consecutive league victories have lifted his team to fifth in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, just inside the play-off zone.

But with four games to go, Deacey knows the players cannot lose their focus.

He said: “Some of our rivals are choking a bit and still have each other to play.

“That means that not all of them can take maximum points but you can’t rely on other results to get you in the top five.

“You have to do it yourself and to start with we have to win a tricky fixture on Saturday.

“The players cannot afford to take their foot off the gas because we, on the management and coaching side, are taking nothing for granted.

“Look what happened against Hucknall Town. They are struggling and they gave us a tough game – it was only our first goal that lifted the pressure.”

Avenue ended up winning that match 6-0 at Horsfall on Monday and will be hoping to take the feel-good factor with them on Saturday.

Deacey still has selection problems, with skipper Rob O’Brien and attacking midfielder Nicky Boshell the main concerns but there are other doubts.

Deacey said: “Rob missed the last game through injury but sits out at the weekend because of a one-game ban.

“He will be available for Monday at home to Ashton United but then begins a two-match suspension, so will miss our last two games of the season.

“Nicky has missed the last few with injury and I don’t think he will make it on Saturday.

“Matty Plummer is only just back from injury, James Riley has been in and out because he was cup-tied for the League Cup semi-final and James Knowles has suspensions because he was sent off in consecutive games.”
