 Guiseley’s higher standing on the non-league ladder did count in last night's West Riding County Cup final at Valley Parade but only during extra-time as Thackley pushed their rivals all the way in an entertaining derby in front of more than 1,000 spectators.

Thackley led twice, with both goals coming from the boot of Nicky Matthews.

He opened the scoring in the seventh minute and added another seven minutes after the break but had to be withdrawn later after aggravating a groin injury.

A shot from Guiseley’s Joe O’Neill after half an hour cancelled out Thackley’s first and ensured the sides headed into the break all square.

Darryn Stamp headed the Lions level for a second time in the 72nd minute and that took the final into the extra period.

O’Neill put the Lions in front for the first time in the 100th minute before he followed Thackley scorer Matthews out of the game with an injury.

In the second period of extra-time, Guiseley’s leading scorer James Walshaw was brought down in the area and he got to his feet to fire home from the penalty spot.

With just seven minutes remaining the two-goal cushion was beyond the Dennyboys, who had given everything up to that point, but they made the short journey home with their heads held high.

Guiseley, who had enjoyed the lions’ share of the support from the terraces, celebrated wildly, as well they should after such a good season in knockout competitions.

They reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, going out to Football League-bound Crawley, and the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy, where they were knocked out by Luton.
