Luke Dean will be given as long as it takes for a proper shot at a new City contract.
The unlucky youngster has been out of action since July, when he broke his leg in the opening pre-season friendly against Eccleshill.
With his short-term deal due to expire next month, the rookie midfielder could have feared the worst for his Valley Parade future.
But Peter Taylor has promised to allow him the time needed to get back into contention before delivering the verdict.
Dean, who made his debut last season as a substitute against Morecambe, has recently rejoined training and will be boosted by the news.
Taylor said: “We’ll look to keep his contract going until he gets himself 100 per cent fit and then make a decision from there.
“I was very sorry for Luke to get the injury that he did but he has worked very hard with (physio) Damian (Buck) to get himself back.
“His contract at the moment is up in January but we’ll definitely be looking at it. I’m sure he will be getting longer.”
Taylor remains optimistic that the Boxing Day clash with leaders Chesterfield at Valley Parade will survive the current cold snap.
He said: “I think there’s a good chance it will be on because it’s meant to get a bit warmer. It’s a game we are looking forward to.”
