Leeds manager Simon Grayson will be surprised if leading scorer Luciano Becchio agrees a new contract before the transfer window opens next month.

Grayson is keen to see the Argentinian striker put pen to paper on a new deal but time is running out.

“There are not many bigger clubs in terms of what we can get back to achieving but obviously some other clubs pay better wages than we do,” said Grayson.

Talks are also on-going with midfielder Neil Kilkenny, whose contract expires in the summer, but United have made their final offer to Bradley Johnson, who could leave during the transfer window.

“I don’t think there is enough time for anything to be sorted out with the players before the window opens because we have so many games coming up over the next few weeks,” said Grayson.

“I don’t have time and Shaun Harvey, our chief executive officer, doesn’t have time to be talking about contracts on a regular basis when the most important thing is to get results for the football club.

“We are constantly looking at players at home and abroad who may be available and who could improve our squad, though I feel we have a good group who can carry us forward for the rest of the season at the very least.”

Jamaican international midfielder Jason Morrison, 26, is due to end his trial with the club in the middle of next week.

Morrison played in a friendly against Newcastle on Monday and is to have another run-out behind closed doors before a decision is reached on his future.
