Eccleshill United 1, Thackley 3

A three-goal salvo late in the game saw visitors Thackley progress to the third round of the West Riding County Cup at the expense of nearest neighbours Eccleshill United tonight.

Just two miles separates the clubs and this was a keen derby but an entertaining one which was played in the right spirit.

The sides were well matched until the final quarter when the visitors raced into an unassailable lead.

Matt Morgan, a former Eagles player, broke the deadlock in the 71st minute when the home defence failed to clear a cross.

The Dennyboys’ skipper Ross Daly soon added the second before Josh McClean netted to make it three goals in a nine minute spell.

Marcus Edwards, fresh from his five-timer after coming on from the bench in Saturday’s 6-1 win over Hemsworth, pulled one back for the Eagles that restored respectability to the scoreline.

Guiseley were triumphant in the other second- round derby as they edged past Brighouse Town 1-0 at Nethermoor.

The Lions bossed the number of chances created but Town defended stoically and matched their higher ranking opponents for fitness.

The home side thought they had opened the scoring just before the half-hour.

A corner was half cleared and clipped back into the area before Danny Ellis saw his shot come back off the bar. Joe O’Neill headed the rebound in but was flagged offside.

The winning goal came just before the interval as O’Neil fired in from a tight angle.

Liversedge went out by the odd goal in three at home to Pontefract Collieries.

The first half was goalless but Ponte opened the scoring through Craig Stephens in the 48th minute. Jason Bentley added a second before Rob Boardman replied for Sedge.

Only one tie involving a local club went to extra time, and that was Farsley’s trip to Harrogate Railway Athletic.

Neil Parsley’s men were level at the end of 90 minutes but ended up being knocked out.

Colin Hunter scored the only goal of the first half for the visitors but Scott Driscoll levelled just after half-time.

Farsley skipper Dominic Krief had a penalty saved in the first extra period before a Michael Duckworth strike and a brace from Kevin Ryan saw Railway run out comfortable 4-1 winners.

FC Halifax Town comfortably progressed into the quarter-finals with a 4-0 win at Barnoldswick Town.

It was a night to remember for the strike partnership of Richard Marshall and Scott Hogan, who both got on the scoresheet in the first half.

Marshall got the scoring underway after just five minutes when he headed in Scott Metcalfe’s corner, before Hogan, who was making his debut for the club, pounced on a poor clearance from Barnoldswick keeper Billy Carrington to deftly chip the stranded goalkeeper and get off the mark for The Shaymen.

Marshall doubled his tally after 35 minutes when he headed in Nathan Taylor’s cross from the right at the back post before completing his hat-trick just before half-time when he fired across the keeper from Hogan’s cross.

Halifax continued to dominate the match in the second half as their lower-league opposition visibly tired.

Nathan Taylor and Marshall both went close to piling further misery on the hosts, but Carrington did well to keep The Shaymen at bay.

There was still time for Scott Phelan to add a late fifth with a well-placed finish from inside the box.
