David Syers wants only one thing for City this Christmas – results. And he doesn’t care how the team gets them.
The Bantams scuffed their way to a 1-0 win over basement-dwellers Hereford at Valley Parade thanks to the midfielder’s sixth goal of his debut professional campaign.
In-form Syers blasted home from 25 yards but City made hard work of holding off a side who have won only twice since the opening day of the season.
Syers admitted the display was well below par but insisted he will take that again if the points keep coming.
He said: “You look back at the Macclesfield game when we played very well and got nothing. It feels a lot better after this one.
“We sat down beforehand and spoke about coming into the Christmas period with six games in three weeks. At this stage it’s all about results.
“If we win more than we lose, we’ll be pushing up that table and hitting the second half of the season in a good position.
“At the moment, it really doesn’t matter how we get the three points. They are the only important thing.”
Syers netted in the seventh minute but City wasted chances to make the game safe. Omar Daley hit a post but was also guilty of wasting a one-on-one, while Tom Adeyemi did the same.
Hereford’s Nicky Featherstone also clipped the woodwork as the visitors bossed the second half.
Syers said: “I wanted to put it right after the Macclesfield match and luckily the first chance I got I managed to do so.
“We were all really happy to have this game on and the ground staff deserve a big vote of thanks.
“No disrespect to Hereford but playing the bottom side at home is something you want to use as a stepping stone at the start of a tough run of games in quick succession.
“It was just unfortunate we couldn’t get the second goal. We had a few chances and that would have put it to bed.
“The performance wasn’t great but we’ll take the three points into next week.
“We’ve all got the confidence in ourselves. These are the games you have to win.”
But City suffered another injury to a defender when on-loan youngster Rob Kiernan limped off towards the end.
Taylor said: “I’m disappointed for Rob because I was pleased with him. He showed good character.
“It just seems to be the curse of the centre halves. But hopefully Steve Williams will have a chance for next week and possibly Lewis Hunt as well.”
