Brighouse Town are taking a memorable step tomorrow by playing their first-ever game on the second rung of the non-league ladder – but next Saturday will be even more ground-breaking.
The world’s oldest and most famous club knockout competition will feature a new name in its list of ties. Town are making their inaugural bow in the FA Cup and they have even landed a home tie.
Manager Mark Brier is delighted and massively disappointed in equal measure as he will miss the game due to a holiday. He will also be absent for the midweek Northern Counties East League President’s Cup tie at Farsley AFC’s Throstle Nest.
Brier said: “It will be Brighouse Town’s first venture in the FA Cup and I’ll be away. I am, as they say, gutted.
“I was involved with Liversedge as a coach under Eugene (Lacy, who was Sedge manager at the time) when we went on that long run, so I know how sweet it can be.
“Even if you are not fortunate enough to progress through a round or two, it is still a competition you want to be involved in as a player, a coach, a manager or a club.”
Liversedge almost made it through to the first-round proper but lost to Chasetown by the odd goal in a fourth qualifying-round clash.
The midland outfit then drew a Football League club but Sedge had already earned enough from their run to have the pitch at Clayborn, with its infamous slant, levelled and relaid.
Brier witnessed that at first hand and would love to emulate Sedge’s success with his home-town club. But if they are to get over the first hurdle, which is the extra preliminary round, they will have to do it without their boss.
“I’m leaving things in the capable hands of Daz Attwood (assistant manager) for the Farsley game and the FA Cup tie against Dunston UTS,” said Brier.
“They are a very strong side and finished fourth in the Northern League last season but we are in this round on merit after our promotion last term.
“It will be a tough old week for Daz because we all know how strong Farsley will be. They were effectively in the Blue Square North last season.
“I hate missing games after the season starts, and these two are massive cup ties for our club, but I have no option.
“As a favour, a family friend has paid for luxury accommodation in Corfu. All I have to do is buy the ticket to get there. It was all booked and taken care of over six months ago, so we didn’t know any of these games were coming.”
