Liversedge 1 Legends XI 2

 The spectators at Clayborn and charity benefited greatly from an entertaining game that doubled as a pre-season friendly for Liversedge.

Sedge are moving into their centenary season and to mark that they arranged a fixture against a Legends XI.

It was the brainchild of management team Sean Regan and Billy Miller, and it also marked their departure.

With former Bantams old boys Wayne Jacobs – now assistant manager at Valley Parade – and Peter Beagrie among the Legends team, there was plenty of interest.

It was the visitors who won it with two goals from Chris Freestone in the 15th and 20th minutes.

Sedge did respond through Jerrod Peltier but that was 12 minutes from time, and the result was of secondary importance.

Sedge spokesman John Hewitt said: “It was a fantastic day for the club and I’m sure the fans enjoyed it because the barbecue was very busy all afternoon.

“Most of the Legends who promised to come did but Dean Windass had to pull out because he was involved in the Yorkshire Masters at Sheffield Arena, which was on Sky Sports last night. Brian Deane was here but he had picked up a knock so was in the dugout running their side.

“We raised over £1,000 on the day and it was a joint fundraiser for the club and charity.

“The British Liver Trust was where Sean and Billy wanted the money to go to and we gave them the lion’s share, £600, so it was worthwhile as well as enjoyable.”

Regan has left after being offered a full time role with Scunthorpe United’s Academy and Miller, who is a coach with Darlington Town’s Academy, has decided to go at the same time.
