Bury 4, Leeds United 0

Leeds crashed to a second pre-season defeat as they were thrashed by Bury in pouring rain at Gigg Lane.

It means Simon Grayson’s side have scored just one goal in their first three warm-up matches ahead of the new campaign.

League Two outfit Bury, with former United midfielder Peter Sweeney in their ranks, had failed to win any of their first three friendlies but deserved this victory.

Grayson did not risk Billy Paynter, Richard Naylor, Jason Crowe, Lloyd Sam and Alan Martin, who are carrying knocks, and started with Mike Grella and Luciano Becchio up front.

Leeds put together some good moves in the first half and created a few chances, Bradley Johnson hitting the crossbar, while Robert Snodgrass especially caught the eye.

But the longer the half went on, the more Bury came into the game and they were rewarded just before the break when Ryan Lowe put them into the lead with a good finish at the far post.

Midway through the second half, Bury took off some of their best players in a five-man substitution and Andy Bishop quickly made his mark, rounding off a good one-two to put the hosts further ahead – and they had another ruled out for offside.

Grayson also made a series of changes but still Leeds were pedestrian, only rarely threatening the home keeper, and Bury had the last word with Danny Carlton getting on the scoresheet and Bishop firing in a late penalty.
