Michael Boulding is playing for free in a bid to earn a deal with Barnsley.
The former City striker is currently on trial at Oakwell, where he had a two-year spell earlier in his career.
And it is not costing the Championship club a penny to cast an eye over the 34-year-old.
A year ago, Boulding took a pay cut to remain at Valley Parade when the Bantams were looking to shed the higher earners.
Now he has gone one step further by agreeing to play for nothing in the hope of persuading Barnsley to sign him up.
Boulding’s offer has gone down well with the Football League. Director of external affairs Gavin Megaw said: “Both the club and the player deserve credit for this arrangement.
“The player gains a valuable opportunity to earn a contract if successful and the club gains from a player demonstrating a great attitude and belief in his ability. We wish Michael every success.”
Boulding, who left City in March, is expected to play in Barnsley’s opening friendly at York tomorrow.
