Ossett Town 1, Guiseley 4

Guiseley stayed level on points and games played with near-neighbours Bradford after strolling to an expected victory over relegation-threatened Ossett Town in another West Yorkshire derby fixture yesterday in the UniBond League Premier Division.

The Lions knew they had to win to give themselves any chance of wrestling the lead away from Avenue should they have slipped up ahead of Monday’s meeting of the title chasers at Nethermoor.

Guiseley did their bit by winning but found out after the final whistle that their great rivals had also banked a maximum.

It was still a good day for the Lions as they saw the goal difference that separates the clubs cut by two to eight.

Jamie Walshaw had gone close twice before he opened the scoring from the spot in the 18th minute. He was fouled in the area but got up to convert the penalty.

A rapid-fire double late in the first half saw the contest ended, even though Town hit back with a penalty kick of their own.

The Lions doubled their advantage in the 40th minute when Jerome Fitzgerald started a move in which Walshaw provided the final cross and Adam Mller the final touch.

Minutes later, Guiseley’s former Leeds United youth striker Simon Johnson lashed in a shot from the edge of the area.

In the last minute of the first half, James Cotterill was guilty of a foul in the area and Dan Sherrife fired in Town’s solitary reply.

Just after the hour, Johnson turned provider as his corner was headed home by Stuart Rudd.

Rudd had a later shot parried for a corner, and when Steve Burton sent the flag kick in Fitzgerald met it with a good header that hit the bar.
