Blyth Spartans 1 Farsley Celtic 0

The UniBond League champions edged out the Challenge Cup winners in last night's end-of-season commemorative trophy match and prevented Farsley Celtic ending the campaign with a fourth celebration.

Title winners Blyth had home advantage and won the game thanks to Christian Grimm's 56th-minute strike.

The next time the sides meet it will be in the Conference North next season after the West Yorkshiremen joined the north-easterners in the higher league via the play-offs.

While last night's result was a disappointment, put in perspective it was small beer after the squad had battled long and hard for the prizes that really mattered.

The League Cup, the West Riding County Cup and promotion to the Conference North meant it was already a hugely successful season.

"Nobody likes to lose a football match," said tough task-master Lee Sinnott. "It was a narrow defeat, a close game in every respect, but it still hurts.

"I thought the overriding factor was one of tiredness not just from our lads, who have done so much. Both teams looked shattered and fair play to all of the players for putting in the extra effort.

"It has been a long, hard season and that has obviously taken its toll. I know we had five regulars missing and I imagine Blyth also had a few selection problems but if the sides weren't at their best the game didn't suffer for that.

"Blyth won it with one goal and there was nothing else clear-cut by way of chances. The players were a little down after not winning but if I had to sacrifice one trophy out of the four, it would be this one."
