Lee Bullock column

Everyone knows that footballers love to have an excuse and something to moan about.

The pitch wasn’t right, the preparation was bad – things like that to try and explain away their poor game.

But a move to a new training ground should stop anyone complaining.

It’s good news to hear that the club are looking at a different venue where they will be able to do everything. And a sign of the direction they are looking to go.

At this level you accept that training facilities are not going to be the best but the majority of teams have their own place.

The pitches at Apperley Bridge are normally pretty good, although it floods in the winter. The groundsman does a great job but ideally you just want somewhere you can call your own.

You want a training ground where you can eat together and then maybe go back out to do some more work afterwards. We obviously can’t do that at the moment.

And things can be done privately, such as specific set-pieces. When you are going through routines on a Friday, you never know who might be watching.

A proper training ground will be a big pull for whoever’s at the club next season.

When I was at Hartlepool, they trained at Darlington University and that was brilliant. New players would be shown straight away where we trained and you could see they were up for it.

A new training ground at Bradford probably should have happened when they were in the Premiership. But it would be brilliant if it happened now.

Teams that do things right are always the most successful. Those that are Dog and Duck will never go on. Teams that want the best usually go on and be the best.
