Glossop North End 3, Silsden 1

Another promising Vodkat League performance from Silsden’s young squad ultimately produced nothing as they were swept away by an experienced Glossop North End outfit.

The home side were made to work hard for their win but two late goals saw them bag all three Premier Division points.

It could have been worse for the Cobbydalers as mid-table rivals Glossop missed an injury-time penalty.

Two early decisions went the hosts’ way, the first when Silsden were breaking forward. Jamie Longley darted between the home centre backs and was brought down and a free-kick was awarded but the culprit was only shown a yellow card when he could have been perceived as being the last man.

The resulting free-kick was well struck by Danny McNulty but it flew inches over the bar.

The next free-kick was a contentious one awarded to the home side and it led to the deadlock being broken.

Pete Hanson appeared to win the ball cleanly but the assistant referee flagged. The kick was whipped in from just outside the area by Dave Young and Garry Kharas converted it with a header.

Silsden got back into the game just after the hour with a fine goal. Full back Jordan Lewis tore down the flank and provided a good cross that picked out Damien Whiteoak. His header was parried by the Glossop keeper but Longley tucked in the rebound.

The Cobbydalers were running out of steam and two corners in the 72nd minute had their defence on the back foot, with Andy Hurst rifling home a shot.

Then in the penultimate minute Rick Bailey netted following a quickly-taken free-kick.

Three minutes into stoppage time a poor challenge in the area gifted Glossop the chance to make it four but Young’s effort from the spot struck the post.

Cobbydalers boss Chris Reape said: “To be honest, I was very pleased with the attitude and effort of the lads. Had they scored that penalty it would have been really unfair on us as a team.

“We were disappointed with some of the decisions but that’s football. Their defender could easily have been sent off for pulling Jamie down and Pete is adamant that he won the ball fairly when they got their first goal.

“On top of that, we had a good penalty shout turned down when Longley was clattered. They were just 1-0 up at the time so we could have been coming in at half-time all square.

“It’s been hard on the lads, especially the last three weeks when they have deserved something from games and got nothing.”
