Bradford Park Avenue remain at the top of the Premier Division table despite having their UniBond League home fixture postponed but their lead is now a slender one point.

Avenue were looking forward to the visit of Whitby Town on Saturday but a waterlogged Horsfall Stadium pitch intervened.

Being four points clear before the weekend, it was impossible for any of their rivals to overtake Avenue but it has made it tight at the top.

It helped the Bradford side’s cause that Guiseley and Retford United, in third and fourth respectively, thrashed out a draw and fifth-placed North Ferriby United had to come from a goal down to earn a point from a home draw.

But second-placed Boston United and Kendal Town, who are sixth, both eased to three points with comprehensive 5-0 home victories.

The one plus for Avenue from the weekend is that they are back to two games in hand on Boston and Retford and have now played the same number as neighbours Guiseley, who they still have to play both home and away.

Avenue director Kevin Hainsworth felt the postponement against Whitby was unavoidable and the right decision was reached early.

“I was at the ground working on an area of the pitch for an hour before the inspection and the water was going nowhere,” he said.

“Half of the pitch was under standing water and it would never have been playable even with an army of people helping.

“The referee we got in for the inspection agreed with that and we reluctantly made the call to Whitby.

“They were due to set off at 11am, so we couldn’t hang about. It was the right thing because the rain didn’t stop.

“Most of us went over to Guiseley to watch them play Retford as it was a rare chance to see two promotion rivals at the same time.”

Meanwhile, a team from Bantams fanzine City Gent fought of competition from Avenue, FC Halifax Town and Leeds United to win the annual quiz night organised by Bradford Park Avenue Supporters Club, which was held at Horsfall Stadium on Thursday night.

The City Gent team, comprising editor Mike Harrison, Mark Neale, Sue Hamilton, Robert Hamilton and Julie Neale, amassed a total of 84 points from a possible 100 to win the trophy.
