Guiseley 1, Barnoldswick Town 1
(after extra time)
Barnoldswick won 4-2 on penalties
Guiseley were knocked out of the West Riding County Cup at the semi-final stage tonight by lower-ranking opposition, despite Barnoldswick Town finishing with ten men.
The Lions had been handed home advantage by the draw and must have fancied their chances of progressing even more when their visitors had a centre back dismissed for an off-the-ball incident on the half- hour.
It was goalless at the time. Guiseley striker James Walshaw had missed an earlier penalty after being fouled in the area, but the home side led at the break after Stuart Rudd’s 44th-minute free-kick.
More chances followed for the Lions in the second half but they were stunned by Joseph Shelmerding’s 68th-minute equaliser.
It was one-way traffic as Guiseley’s strong line-up tried to force their way into the final but the sides were still locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes of football.
Walshaw and James Cotterill were on target with their spot-kicks but failed attempts by Danny Ellis and Dave Briggs left the UniBond Premier Division side on the end of a 4-2 reverse after the penalty shoot-out.
