Leeds United’s superior goal difference could hold the key to automatic promotion.

Chairman Ken Bates believes it is worth an extra point – a view that is reinforced by the statistics.

Although Leeds are just five points ahead of third-placed Charlton, Simon Grayson’s men have a goal difference of plus 32, while the Londoners’ goal difference is plus 19. Millwall, in fourth place, are plus 21, while fifth-placed Colchester are at plus 16.

Norwich, who are seven points clear of Leeds, have the best goal difference in League One with plus 39.

Meanwhile, United are hoping goalkeeper Shane Higgs and defender Ben Parker will be fit enough to return from injury when the reserves play Lincoln City at Elland Road tonight.
