Last weekend’s blank Saturday could not have come at a more inappropriate time for Liversedge boss Sean Regan and his players.

In the previous four games, Sedge had banked a maximum 12 points and turned their Northern Counties East League Premier Division season around.

Regan said: “We have been having a decent run and I knew we would be okay once we got everybody back in contention and had minutes on the pitch.

“A lot of our goals have come in the last quarter of games which suggests that our fitness is back.”

The Sedge boss feels his squad suffered more than most when the bleak mid-winter caused weeks of mass postponements.

He said: “The weather break didn’t work in our favour one little bit.

“It’s alright saying everyone was in the same boat but we weren’t and it took some coming back from.

“We had just lost two very big players from our squad and their replacements couldn’t settle in.

“We missed weeks on end and were forced to train indoors most of the time, which is never ideal.

“It’s okay for keeping you in shape during the summer but it’s nowhere near the correct preparation for winning 11-a-side games in the middle of a season.

“When most of the other teams were getting the odd league game in and arranging friendlies, we were still stuck with just training. Once we got some games in it was still about getting the new signings settled.

“Now we have Ben Hardy, Andy Philp and keeper Stewart Wilkinson all doing really well.

“A settled side breeds confidence and when the results come like they have recently it doubles. Things are pretty good at the moment.”
