Guiseley’s impressive recent run continued in midweek when they banked a sixth win from their last seven UniBond League starts to move up to third in the Premier Division.

With games in hand over all four of the other teams in the top five, which encompasses the play-off places, the Lions have established themselves as the main threat to the leaders for the one automatic promotion spot.

The fact that the current incumbents of that place at the summit are neighbours Bradford Park Avenue adds even more spice to the recipe.

Guiseley spokesman Stuart Allen said: “It is getting nailbiting now. We went up to third in midweek and we have the games in hand but Steve (manager Kittrick) and the players are not getting ahead of themselves.

“We have two very tough games against Avenue to take into the equation and other big games as well. The one pleasing thing at the moment is that the squad is pretty much injury-free, which is just what you need with such a congested fixture schedule from here on in.”

Allen confirmed that there were no players doubtful following Tuesday’s 2-1 home win over Burscough. Kittrick knows that Saturday’s trip to Hucknall Town will be a far different proposition.

Hucknall are seventh and with enough games left to force their way into the play-off frame. Burscough are third from bottom after a poor season, although the Guiseley manager points out that clubs fearing relegation can often be the most dangerous.
