Second-placed Leeds tackle their game in hand at Tranmere tonight with defender Leigh Bromby insisting they can still catch Norwich and take the League One title.

The credentials of Simon Grayson’s team to gain automatic promotion have been questioned by just two league wins in 2010 and third-placed Charlton are now a mere two points behind.

But Bromby said: “We are not looking over our shoulders. Last August we would have taken second place at this stage of the season. People have to realise we are in a very good position.

“We are looking above us at Norwich rather than behind us at the chasing pack. If we play like we did against Brentford then the wins will come, there’s no doubt about it.

“We have to believe we can catch Norwich. We set out from the outset to be champions and that is still our aim.”

A 1-1 home draw against Brentford was a blow as Norwich increased their advantage to seven points but Bromby is looking on the bright side.

He said: “We were all disappointed not to win, especially at home, but there were positives to take from the game and we will go to Tranmere with our confidence still high.

“At times against Brentford we were back to how we were at the beginning of the season, so we have to take that into tonight’s game.

“Teams don’t come to Elland Road to lie down. They came blatantly for a point and were tough to break down.

“Sometimes you need a bit more quality in the final third but there were enough encouraging things to take from the game.”

Dewsbury-born right back Bromby, who came into central defence on Saturday in place of the injured Richard Naylor, keeps being switched between positions but he is not complaining.

“I don’t seem to be getting settled into one position at the moment but maybe that’s why Simon signed me because I am versatile and hopefully I can put in a good performance wherever I play,” he said.

“‘Nayls’ is a vastly experienced player who we miss when he isn’t there. He is our captain and a born leader.

“Although he missed the Brentford game with an injury, it’s not a bad one so hopefully he’ll be back for the next game.”

Jermaine Beckford’s first goal since the end of January rescued a point against Brentford and Bromby said: “It was good that Becks scored.

“He is one of those players who can go a few games without a goal but he is well into the 20s again this season and has been fantastic for us.

“If he can go on a run now he could take us up. His goals are really important to us, so fingers crossed.”
