Mark McCammon will muscle his way into City’s plans against basement club Darlington tomorrow.

The 31-year-old targetman is set to sign a month’s loan after falling out with Gillingham boss Mark Stimson.

McCammon’s arrival will take James Hanson out of the firing line. But Peter Taylor stressed City’s top scorer is still very much in his thoughts.

Taylor said: “I just felt we needed something else. I thought James on Saturday was looking really tired.

“But it’s his first season at this level and he has done very well. I like him because, although he’s missed two sitters in the last two games, he keeps getting in the areas. He did great for the third goal on Tuesday.”

McCammon played in the 2004 FA Cup final for Millwall and scored the first goal at the Keepmoat Stadium three years ago with Doncaster.

He helped Gillingham win promotion last season but has not featured recently and got involved in a public spat with Stimson.

Taylor added: “I’ve known Mark and looked at his career and he’s played in the Championship.

“I’ve never worked with him before but very nearly signed him on a few occasions.

“He’s out of the team at Gillingham so he’s got a point to prove. Hopefully it will be good for both of us.”

Taylor believes McCammon’s muscular presence could be key if Steve Staunton’s struggling Quakers defend in numbers.

He said: “There are times where you play teams who get a lot of bodies behind the ball and, if you’ve got small strikers, that’s very difficult to break down, especially if it’s an awkward pitch.

“You also want people to be much braver on the ball as they were on Tuesday and it’s up to me to get the balance right.

“But for me, even Arsenal want a big centre forward because sometimes they play lovely stuff but just need that other option.”

Omar Daley is back in the squad and trained yesterday.
