Silsden’s Vodkat Premier Division clash at lowly Formby was postponed at the 11th hour after the Cobbydalers had made the trip to the west coast.
The wasted journey was down to a waterlogged pitch and not the deep frost which prevented a lot of other weekend games getting the green light.
Cobbdalers’ secretary and spokesman Jim Rosser said: “They had some heavy rain overnight Friday into Saturday and there was some standing water on the surface.
“The centre circle had puddles on it and some sand. At least 90 per cent of the surface was playable but the referee deemed it was dangerous. Both sets of players were there and wanted to play – there were league officials present and they also wanted it played.
“A pitch inspection had been made at 11am and at that time it was okay so they felt safe leaving the final decision to the match referee. He had only come up the coast from Birkenhead but he said it wasn’t fit.
“It was very frustrating for both clubs and our lads were really disappointed. The wife and I went for a walk on the beach instead – it was eight degrees and very sunny so we had a lovely time. Makes you wonder though.”
