Park Avenue boss John Deacey is playing down the fact his side are leaders of the pack.

The Horsfall side took over at the UniBond Premier summit last weekend and aim to stay there with a win at Burscough on Saturday.

Though they are only top on goal difference, they have two games in hand on second-placed Retford United.

But Deacey echoed reserve team manager Wayne Benn, who put a lid on expectations after last Saturday’s win over Marine.

The boss said: “I’m not too bothered about being top at this stage of the season – just the way we are playing.”

Key to Avenue’s six-match winning streak in the league has been a settled side.

When asked for his squad for Saturday, Deacey said: “It will be the same as last Saturday – I can’t change it can I?”

“Rob O’Brien came off at half-time against Marine but he should be okay.

“It seems he just overstretched and didn’t do too much damage. Matty James came on for him and he also had a good game.

“That has been the thing really because the lads have done well when they have needed to. That is the beauty of having a strong but small squad and I’m also pleased that Chris Hall has returned to full fitness. He was outstanding against Marine.”

“I was very pleased with the performance last week, especially on that surface because it was touch and go that the game was played.

"It was hard and areas of the pitch were more slippery than others. You could see the players from both sides having difficulties and as the afternoon went on and it got colder it was beginning to freeze up again.

“We did well and created a lot. Perhaps that means we should have scored more goals but that doesn’t matter. As long as the points keep coming in threes, chances missed won’t make a difference to our season.”
