Stuart McCall has praised Omar Daley for coming back stronger than ever from his injury hell.
The Jamaican has now played two full games to go with four substitute outings since snapping his cruciate a year ago.
And McCall points to Daley’s influence in the unlikely comeback win at Torquay as proof that he is now better equipped to torment League Two defenders than ever.
Daley burst into life in the closing 15 minutes as City launched an unexpected recovery to grab their first win since early December.
McCall said: “In both games where he has played 90 minutes, Omar has got stronger as time has gone on.
“When we first came to the club he couldn’t play three games in a week. You’d have to take him off after 60-65 minutes because he physically wasn’t up to it.
“So credit to him and the medical staff for working so well on his fitness. He has come back in brilliant condition.
“He is such a threat with his pace and ability, even more so if he can still do it towards the end of the game when opponents are tired.”
City’s rediscovered belief from grabbing their first win in seven games has been evident on the training ground as they build up to the Valley Parade clash with third-placed Bury.
McCall added: “It just shows you how important confidence is in football.
“Evo (Gareth Evans) goes a long time without scoring. Then he gets two on Saturday and suddenly he’s whacking them in from every angle in training.
“Strikers need a goal to get them going; midfielders like to make that good pass or wingers that run. It’s about being confident in what you do.
“It’s the same at every level. You look at Nani for Manchester United. He has a good game against Hull one week and then he’s absolutely outstanding at Arsenal.
“That confidence builds with playing well and getting good results. We know that one win isn’t the be all and end all but it’s a start.”
The City players were given their homework to watch Bury’s win over Rochdale on Sky on Monday night.
McCall said: “Premier League clubs will give out DVDs for each player to study their own opponent. We can’t do that so the game being on TV was a good chance for everyone to watch who they will be up against.
“Ninety-five per cent of the lads will have watched the Man United game the day before, so I said there were no excuses. I know OB (Luke O’Brien) loves his soaps but I banned them for one night!”
Meanwhile, Steve O’Leary yesterday signed a new deal to remain at Valley Parade for the rest of the season. The injury-hit midfielder, who has played just once for City, was on the bench at Torquay.
