Farsley Celtic 2 FC Halifax Town 1
Farsley Celtic made it through to the quarter-finals of the West Riding County Cup after edging out near-neighbours and close rivals Halifax Town in tonight's second-round tie.
The Celts won despite the best efforts of one of their former players to spoil the night at Throstle Nest.
The Shaymen’s Kevin Sanasy set up a tense last period when he pulled a goal back 12 minutes from time.
The home side’s hero was assistant player-manager/ first-team coach Simeon Bambrook as he struck a brace to put Farsley 2-0 up.
He netted his first with a close-range tap-in in the 14th minute and he lashed in a deflected shot from the edge of the area early in the second half.
The nerves set in when former Bantams and Farsley striker Sanasy halved the deficit in the 78th minute.
Halifax had forced a corner and, when the ball was whipped in, a header towards goal was flicked in off Sanasy’s forehead giving Celts keeper Piotr Skiba no chance.
Shaymen boss Neil Aspin, a former Leeds United player, turned out for his side for only the second time and played the entire first half.
Sanasy was not the only former Celts and Avenue player in the Halifax team as Mark Hotte also started.
Farsley press officer James Grayson said: “It was a very good evening all round, the game was close and the spectators saw plenty of old and new faces.
“There were several of Mark Jackson’s rising stars from the under-19s in our squad.”
