Silsden 2, Ashton Athletic 0

Silsden put the disappointment of their 6-5 midweek West Riding County Cup defeat at home to Bradford Park Avenue firmly behind them by taking maximum Vodkat League points on Saturday.

The Cougar Park venue was the same, as was the Cobbydalers’ desire, but the result was this time in their favour as they eased to victory over struggling Ashton Athletic to stay sixth in the Premier Division.

A goal in each half was enough for the home side, with the strikes coming from experienced members of the squad.

Jamie Longley was involved in both as he set up the first and netted the second. He made headway on the flank and turned in a cross that Chris Simpson converted with a shot from the edge of the six-yard box.

In the second half, a ball down the channel sent Harry Thompson clear and he beat one defender before crossing to Longley, who fired home from 18 yards.

Cobbydalers boss Chris Reape said: “It was not our best performance, in fact I think it was the worst since I’ve been here, but a lot of that could have been down to some very tired legs from Wednesday night’s cup tie against Avenue.

“At the end of the day, I can’t fault the lads. We had a job to do and that was to win the game. To be fair to Ashton, for a side second from bottom they played some good football.”
