Leeds United fear Luciano Becchio may have suffered ankle ligament damage which could sideline the Argentine striker for several weeks.

Becchio was injured during last Saturday’s goalless draw against Charlton and initial tests revealed no broken bones. However, his ankle is still swollen and he is having a second X-ray.

“We are looking at possible ligament damage and will assess the extent of the injury when we have the results of the latest X-ray,” said manager Simon Grayson, who is happy United have no match this weekend after postponement of the trip to Bristol Rovers because of international calls.

Debutant striker Davide Somma was the latest casualty when he suffered a hamstring injury near the end of the 2-1 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win against Darlington on Tuesday night.

Robert Snodgrass, Jason Crowe, Shane Higgs, Rui Marques and Ben Parker all missed the Darlington game through injury. Marques has joined up with the Angola squad and will have his Achilles problem assessed by his country’s medical staff.

Grayson hopes some of his injured players will be fit in time for the next home game against Norwich, which has been switched to Monday, October 19 for live Sky coverage.

But he admitted: “The injury situation here at the moment is not far off being as bad as I have known as a manager but we just have to get on with it.”

Grayson was angry with the attitude of some of his players in the JPT Trophy game, complaining: “I was happy that we won the match but I was not happy with how we played.

“We were okay for 30 minutes, got the two goals and then totally took our feet off the gas. I wanted us to go on and win by four or five but a lot of players just relaxed and didn’t do themselves justice.

“I was hugely disappointed with certain individuals. I don’t care if it was a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy game, I have high standards concerning what I expect from the team and some of them just didn’t deliver.

“It was an opportunity for them to play in front of nearly 9,000 fans who had paid good money to come and watch us. We should be going out to entertain them. Players get paid decent money to put in a performance and work hard, so when they get opportunities to play in the team they should grasp it and make it hard for me to leave them out.

“They will be back at work on Friday after a couple of days off. I want to make sure they are fully focused and ready for the Norwich game next week.”

Meanwhile, defender Paul Huntington has had his loan to Stockport extended by a month.
